Frequently Asked Questions
What makes Sandy Bay Massage different from other clinics?
At Sandy Bay Massage, every treatment is tailored to you. Our therapists take the time to understand what your body needs on the day, whether that’s targeted remedial work, deep relaxation, or a combination of both.
We offer a wide range of specialised treatments delivered by qualified therapists, with private health rebates available for eligible services.
Our focus is simple: thoughtful, professional care that helps you move better, feel better, and leave each session genuinely improved.
Do you offer health fund rebates?
Yes! All our fully qualified practitioners offer health fund rebates for our treatments. Occasionally, a practitioner may be unable to facilitate a particular fund. Where this is the case it will be clearly noted.
How do I book an appointment?
You can book online through our website for instant confirmation, or call us on (03) 6223 2328 and we’ll be happy to assist.
Our clinic is open seven days 9:00am – 6:00pm.
What's your cancellation policy?
We understand that sometimes unforeseen circumstances may arise, but we kindly request that you provide us with at least 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment. This allows us to offer the time slot to other clients who may be waiting. If you fail to provide at least 24 hours’ notice or do not show up for your scheduled appointment, we reserve the right to charge you full fee for the session.
What's the difference between relaxation and remedial massage?
Relaxation massage focuses on helping you switch off. It uses gentle, flowing techniques to calm the nervous system, reduce stress and leave you feeling refreshed.
Remedial massage is more targeted. Your therapist will assess areas of tension, pain or injury and use specific techniques to help release tight muscles, improve movement and support recovery.
Both treatments are tailored to you, sometimes a session may even include elements of both.
Can I receive a massage whilst pregnant?
Absolutely. Our therapists regularly work with clients at all stages of pregnancy.
We use a specialised pregnancy support mat that fits onto the massage table, with a comfortable opening for your belly. This allows many clients to safely enjoy a face-down massage well into their pregnancy.
If you’re in your first trimester, just let your therapist know so they can adjust the treatment to suit your stage of pregnancy.
What’s the difference between Ka Huna and Lomi Lomi massage?
Both Ka Huna and Lomi Lomi are inspired by traditional Hawaiian bodywork and are known for their long, flowing strokes and rhythmic movements that encourage deep relaxation.
Ka Huna massage often uses the therapist’s forearms and sweeping, dance-like movements across the body. Many people find it both nurturing and energising.
Lomi Lomi massage typically has a slower, more meditative rhythm, creating a deeply calming experience that encourages the body and mind to fully unwind.
What should I expect at my first appointment?
Your first visit begins with a short consultation so your therapist can understand your health history, areas of tension, and what you’d like to get from the treatment.
They’ll explain the approach before beginning, and you’ll be professionally draped throughout the session for comfort and privacy. You’re always welcome to let your therapist know if you’d like more or less pressure, or if anything feels uncomfortable.
Our goal is to create a treatment that feels both effective and relaxing from start to finish.
What should I do after a massage?
Your body will often continue responding to the treatment for several hours afterwards. A few simple things can help you get the most from your session:
Stay hydrated – Drinking water or herbal tea can help you feel refreshed and support normal recovery.
Keep moving gently – A light walk or some gentle stretching can help maintain mobility and prevent muscles from tightening again.
Use warmth if needed – A warm shower or bath can help keep muscles relaxed and comfortable.
Take it easy – If possible, allow yourself some time to rest and let your body fully settle after the treatment.
Where are you located and is parking available?
We’re at 72 Sandy Bay Road, Battery Point. There’s convenient parking at the rear of our building. We’re easily accessible from anywhere in Southern Tasmania.
What should I wear to my appointment?
Wear comfortable clothing you can easily remove. You’ll be professionally draped with towels throughout your treatment. For some treatments like sports massage, we may work through light clothing if you prefer.
Can I buy gift cards?
Yes, our gift cards make thoughtful presents for any occasion. They’re valid for 36 months and can be used for any treatment. Purchase online or in clinic, with instant digital delivery available.
Who will provide my treatment?
You’ll be treated by one of our experienced and qualified massage therapists.
Each member of our team brings their own skills and experience, and all treatments are tailored to your individual needs.
If you’ve seen a therapist before or have a preference, you’re always welcome to request them when booking.
Can I exercise after a massage?
Yes, gentle movement is usually beneficial. Activities like walking, light stretching or gentle yoga can help keep the body mobile and maintain the benefits of your treatment.
If you’ve had deeper remedial work, it’s best to avoid intense exercise or heavy lifting for the rest of the day. Listening to your body and easing back into activity is always the best guide.
