Understanding Massage

Massage therapy can be a powerful and restorative experience for both body and mind. Through skilled touch and thoughtful technique, massage can help relieve muscular tension, support recovery from physical strain, calm the nervous system and promote a deeper sense of relaxation and wellbeing.

Because massage works directly with the body’s tissues and systems, professional therapists also consider each client’s individual health circumstances before beginning treatment. In some situations, certain conditions may require techniques to be adapted, postponed, or discussed with a healthcare professional beforehand.

The information below outlines some common considerations therapists take into account when planning a treatment. Sharing relevant health information helps ensure your massage is delivered safely, appropriately and with the greatest possible benefit.

Health Considerations & When Massage May Not Be Suitable

Massage is generally safe for most people. However, certain health conditions may require modification, postponement of treatment, or medical clearance before receiving massage.

  • Severe osteoporosis or fragile bones
  • Advanced diabetes with circulatory or nerve complications
  • Neurological conditions affecting sensation
